Why Do Pet Alert Stickers Often Go Unnoticed? Insights from a Firefighter

Fire Pet Safety

Firefighters don’t intentionally ignore pet alert stickers at a house or car fire, but it isn’t their main priority. Their primary focus is life safety, which means rescuing humans takes precedence over animals. While firefighters will certainly try to save a pet if possible, there are often other critical tasks demanding their attention during emergencies.

As a firefighter, I always want to assist anyone in need, including ensuring the safety of pets. Let’s explore why pet alert stickers might not receive immediate attention or priority during a fire. Take a look!

Your number one priority should always be keeping your family safe. As a firefighter, I recommend having updated smoke detectors that don’t require battery changes, a fire extinguisher, and a fire escape ladder if you have bedrooms above the first floor. Safety first!

Do Firefighters Search for Pet Stickers?

No, in general, they do not actively look for pet alert stickers. Until recently, I was unaware of the existence of such stickers. Now I understand that their purpose is to notify responders that there are pets inside a building or vehicle, and those animals may still need rescue during emergencies.

We asked quite a few Firefighters these questions and we added extra steps to help them with safety in mind.

Why fire stickers are ignored:

-The sticker, even if it is found, can’t tell the fire department if your pet is currently in the building or whether it’s out somewhere with you or whether it passed on 3 weeks ago.

Our solution to help: we will have re writable stickers that can be updated with information and a QR code for more information to help...

-In fact, often the sticker doesn’t even refer to the current occupier’s pet, because though you are meant to remove the sticker and take it with you when you move, almost nobody does.

Our solution to help: We will have updated sticker that are re writable so the date can be updated often so you like. Therefore a fire or emergency crew can tell it was updated recently.

-Then there’s the issue that even if there really is a pet and it is at home, there’s no indication of where in the house your pet is – most animals tend to be pretty free-spirited and they don’t obediently sit under a rescue sticker in the middle of a fire.

Our answer to help; We will list pets favorite spots and we will also recommend owners confining some pets via our training and recommendations for fire safety in case of fire.. manage environment...

A QR code will also add more on temperament and tips of animals for best approach...etc...Quick access if a emergency crew has a second or two to scan code. Owners will keep this updated via dashboard to a database...
